Additional plant purchase

Particularly in aquariums with cooler water temperatures like many shrimps prefer, Karolina Haarnixe (Cabomba caroliniana), Nix-herb (Najas guadalupensis), Canadioan waterweed (Elodea densa), horn cabbage (Ceratophyllum demersum) and different Java-ferns (Microsorium) have proved best.

However after acquiring new plants in your shrimp aquarium considerable problems may occur. Again and again you can hear of problems after the additional purchase and the acquirement of new plants into a already available and well working shrimp or cancer aquarium.

Many aquarium plants contain remains of fertilizers or pesticides for what the local zoo authorized dealer can't do anything. In many aquatic plant gardenings the plants are handled with such fertilizers or pesticides.

If you plant such plants in your domestic aquarium the fertilizers and pesticides solve themselves in the water and mix with it. These ones can not cause an immediate damage at the fishes but already in small concentrations they can become doom for the shrimps.

Reports of occasional losses, apathetic behaviour or dying in vast numbers of shrimps and cancers after acquiring new plants are not a rarity. Because of that you should not forget to water the new plants 2-3 days before you bring them into your shrimp basin.

For this purpose you put the plants into a small glass aquarium or a bucket with water und leave the plants some days in that. In order to remove the poisonous materials in the water it is recommended to renew it from time to time. Then the plants should be rinsed again under tiling water. Now you can use the aquarium plants. After you putted the new plants into your aquarium you should observe the behaviour of your shrimps for some days.
