Slough problems for shrimps

The slough is a highly complicated and very strainful process for shrimps and it can lead to the demise of the animals before or after the slough if there are lack appearances or wrong water values.

The slough process is not yet understood in all details until today but it is examined by scientists at Sea Crustaceen.

During the slough two factors play an important role: The feeding and the water quality.

Feeding:
As the most important factor the feeding plays an important role. The care of lime and calcium is mainly done through the feed and the feeding should support the tank construction. Especially frost feed like Artemia, Cyclops or Krill and also the Spirulinalgae contain tank-constructive materials as Fe, Mg, Cl, K, Ma and so on. These materials play an important role at the creation of the new and the curing of the old tank. Incidentally you should also feed a lot of leave and green fodder from time to time.

Shrimp Sticks of Tropical are very recommended. Different tests, both with cancers and with shrimps showed that less slough problems occurred and the animals showed themselves clearly energetically. A detailed test report about tropical shrimp sticks can be seen here.

Water quality:
The water values are secondary if they are not too extreme. But the oxygen supply also plays an decisive function during the slough process. If it is too small the animals start to get sick, it is more complicated for them to leave their old tank and so it can result in a blemish slough. In order to prevent that it is recommended to ventilate the aquarium water with an aragonite.

At least just the same important is the germ number in the aquarium. The number should be as small as possible. Who feeds a lot or does to little water changes achieves, however, exactly the opposite, what also brings increased nitrate, phosphate and ammonia values. A nitrate value of mire than 100 milligrams per litre causes slough problems which often lead to the death, just as increased ammonia or phosphate values.

Prevention:
Shrimps require a lot of calcium in order to increase and to build up their tank. Regular sufficient water change supports the process of a good slough. Create good water values, not too high nitrate, ammonia and phosphate values and feed with calcium-containing feeding.
