Snail leeches
Hated by many breeders and regarded as snail killers. An abatement through collecting them is pointless because where you can find one you can find several. In front of other inhabitants of an aquarium like fishes or shrimps the snail leeches are not dangerous and rather harmless.
According to a test report of Rene Sickel of aquaristikwelle.de snail leech eat exclusively snails. Nothing other. That means that if there isn't any snail in your aquarium the leeches will die sometime. However, this can last very long since they are able to starve very long.

Mostly you get them through new bought snails where you often can find cases in which they hide themselves without being noticed. You can also find them in self made living end feed what is given to the aquarium.
Suitable treatment possibilities against snail leeches:
Since snail leeches occur mainly at snails it is not recommended to proceed against them with Flubenol. Indeed, Flubenol is not dangerous for shrimps or cancers but snails can not take this medicine.
A good possibility offers the medicine Concurat-L. This medicine has proved to be very helpful among many aquarians. Here you should take a proportioning of 7,5g on 1000 litres.
Another possibility is to use garlic in a certain concentration what kills plan aria and snail leeches and lets other inhabitants back without any damage. The gloves of garlic seem to be best if they are given fresh to the water. Experiences about this treatment by a reader can be looked up here. |
